First ever warehouse receipt issued in MozambiqueThe USAID Southern Africa Director of the Regional Economic Growth Office, Mark Wilt and Bill Benjamin, USAID’s Feed the Future Coordinator and Agriculture Team Leader were able to witness Cargill issuing the first ever warehouse receipt in the history of Mozambique through the Warehouse Receipt System developed in conjunction with the Trade Hub. BOM Bank, which has an outreach program of 5,000 “banked” farmers in its database, facilitated the first-ever electronic warehouse receipt trade using an IT system developed by the Trade Hub. The farmer delivered one ton of maize to the weighbridge site, was registered by the system, collected his warehouse receipt copy, received a loan approval, and walked away with his grain safely stored at the Cargill site and a loan to purchase further inputs.

Since commencement of the Strategic Partnership Grant with Cargill, 20 of 40 grain dams have been constructed, with the remaining in progress. Each grain dam holds 130-135 tons, increasing the site capacity by approximately 5,200 tons. The increased capacity has enabled Cargill to increase their purchasing from 7,000 tons of maize last year to a projected 15,000 tons this season.

Working closely with Cargill Mozambique, USAID’s Southern Africa Trade Hub also conducted a training activity, from May 25-30, 2015, for Cargill warehouse managers from around the country. The grain training was conducted by Strategic Partnership Grantee Ybema Grain Services for managers from outer regional buying stations as a pre-season training exercise.
