Trade Hub Shares Best Practices with Namibian Women Entrepreneurs

07 October 2012
As part of its efforts to motivate women entrepreneurs to grow their businesses by entering regional and international export markets, the Trade Hub participated in the 6th Namibia Women’s Summit in Windhoek, Namibia, from August 8-10, 2012. The Trade Hub facilitated sessions on: 1) successful participation in trade events; 2) preparing for the export market; and 3) training needs analysis.

The event was organized by the non-governmental organization, House of Women (HOW), under the theme “The Time is Now.” It was attended by 150 delegates that included women entrepreneurs, women in leadership and decision-making positions in the private, public and civil society sectors, as well as emerging young women leaders and entrepreneurs. Participants were also drawn from South Africa and Zimbabwe.

The Summit provided a platform to promote national and regional dialogue among women through the exchange of ideas, experiences and best practices.

The Trade Hub facilitated sessions increased understanding of the concept of export readiness and the requirements for participating in trade events. They also enabled the women entrepreneurs to think through, discuss and explore the various factors that are constraining them from taking their businesses to the next level through export. From the discussions it was evident that current strategies for promoting export for women-owned enterprises are not effective and it was agreed to engage the Ministry of Trade to reconsider its support strategies.
